Nairn Jazz presents a little bit of magic…
There was magic in the air on Saturday November 25th 2006 when
one of the first jazz stars ever to play in Nairn returned for a
concert with the town’s new favourite.
American tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton has long had a following
in Scotland, thanks to his majestic, velvety sound and superswinging
style. It’s always a treat to hear him, whether he’s
in romantic, balladeering mode (and nobody does love songs like
him) or in a bluesy groove. Hamilton’s 2006 visit to Nairn
was especially memorable in that it was his first musical encounter
here with the current darling of the scene - Italian pianist Rossano
Sportiello. A player who effortlessly blends elegance with warmth
and wit, Sportiello wowed audiences and fellow ivory tinklers at
this year’s Jazz Festival.
Add to the mix the delightful bass and vocals of Niki Parrot (direct
from New York for this encounter) who played a duo concert with
Sportiello on Friday 24th and Hamilton’s regular drummer Steve
Brown, also a favourite of Rossano, and you have all the ingredients
for an unforgettable weekend of jazz!
• Friday 24th November 8.00pm
Rossano & Niki Duo
• Saturday 25th November 8.00pm
with Steve Brown & Scott Hamilton
Both evenings in the intimate setting of the Half Conference Suite
in the Newton Hotel, Nairn.
